Another sunny day. Awesome! Need to catch up on my tanning – I’m white as Karen! =0 … (ok…not quite that white), but not as tan as I usually get on a vacation. My goal being to match the beautiful skin color like Freida has – which I have accomplished only one other time! Then again, it’s not really been a vacation, but a test of living here.
The road workers are out again. 1 digging – 4 watching. They move down the street this morning…which is fine. They make a lot of noise! We’ve also learned that the electricity is supposed to be out tomorrow (Sunday) from 6am to 3pm (or whenever). I don’t know if it’s related, what they are doing or why, but I need to plan ahead for breakfast, lunch and dinner since everything is electric here.
The big goings on today is the 5th Annual San Pedro Holiday Boat Parade. This looks to be an exciting event where boats enter, decorate for the holidays and compete for prizes. (makes me want to buy and enter a boat!) It starts by the bridge here and goes pretty far south (to Caribbean Villas), then back up again. It’s supposed to start at 7 tonight…so we need to get a head start and plan were to go to watch without being in the middle of the crowds. I’ll try to take some pictures and hopefully they will turn out! (click *HERE* to go to the San Pedro Boat Parade website for more information - www.sanpedroboatparade.com)
For now…we are headed into town again to go to the cart company. Our cart is making a horrendous noise and it's hard to steer, so we don’t know if the wheels will stay on utill we leave. We’ll see if they want to exchange it for another before it breaks! (doubtful, but we need to cya and let them know anyway) We also need to get some more water.
Catch ya later!
UPDATE:
Going into town…and the first place we need to go is Crystal golf cart rental to have them check the cart out. It is way on the south end of town. We stop and give them a rundown of the problem. They take a look, and apparently the wheel was already broke (which is why it was making so much noise). But, instead of exchanging the cart, they said they would just fix it. They said they don’t have any available carts to exchange, although I see at least a dozen carts sitting there, but perhaps they aren’t in working condition. They said it would only take 15 minutes, so that means 45. We don’t have much choice, so we walk down the street and mosey into a grocery store to see what they have. Not anything different. Gerald has a hankering for something sweet, and they do have a mallow pie sort of thing. But, if it’s like most everything else, it will taste like moth balls, so we pass. We walk a little further to the corner where Road Kill Bar is. Their fliers say they are having a poker run on December 18. Don’t know if we will be able to make that one, but it might be worth a try. They also have karaoke too. Not interested!
We cross the street to the Crazy Canucks bar to take a look. That’s where Tammy said the big party was going to be last Sunday, but we didn’t go. We have to kill some more time, so might as well go see what it’s about.
Not a bad little place. It’s been here a while and seems like it would be a fun place – lively crowd. As with everything, you have to wind through a resort and there is a restaurant, the Blue Iguana, upstairs. So we stop and have a drink. The view is nice from here and you can see someone working on decorating their boat for the parade tonight. The bartender is playing dominoes with a couple guys at the bar. They don’t really look like indigenous locals, but probably have been here a while. I see some Missouri plates amongst the Canadian paraphernalia hanging off the ceiling and have to take a picture! People think I’m crazy! (what’s new!). I tell the guy sitting there that we are from Missouri too. He said that’s ok…they don’t really like you taking pictures at the swanky restaurants…and I tell him I don’t know, we haven’t gone to any!
We start talking to a couple sitting next to us at the bar. They are here for a couple weeks, then are going down to Placencia, so we share some our favorite places to eat and watch the sunset. We learn that she has lost her passport – my heart dropped at just the thought! But she’s not sure if it was stolen or if she lost it because the other paperwork (all her trip information) that was with is gone too. She’s in paradise, and apparently not in a panic. I’d be curled up on the floor crying!
We also talk about the parade tonight. They are going to watch it from the Blue Iguana upstairs. They talk about the big plans for tomorrow (Sunday) here at the bar and speak of a drummer from some famous band (that I can’t remember of the name of…cause I’m old) and that he was just here and left, but is coming back.
We finish our drink and walk back to pick up the cart. Wow does it drive better! They’ve even washed it! Nice! Now we get to drive it down the mud-hole streets! So much for that!
We head to Crystal and get our bottle of water, then stop at the veggie stand and pick up some fruit and veggies. Might as well go to the big market since we are here, and pick up a Mexican blend cheese mix for salad and some Chips Ahoy chewy cookies for Gerald’s sweet tooth. Hope they’re good. Then we’re back on the road to the condo.
After drinking that big drink at Crazy Canucks, I should have gone to the powder room before I left – so now I’m in trouble. OMG! And these roads are making it worse! And these are the SMOOTH ones! I’ll never make it on the bumpy roads! I’m flying to get home faster…and gawd…we are being bounced around like a lottery ball! Gerald can barely hold on! We will both need chiropractic services when we get home! I can’t help but start to laugh! Then we see a couple of guys in a cart bouncing away too…laughing hysterically. It’s funny if you are slightly intoxicated, and even funnier to watch as they try to preserve their adult beverage. We yell at them to not spill their drinks! We also run into that drummer we saw at Crazy Canucks. He has a set of drums on the back of his golf cart…probably headed back to set up.
We put the groceries away and try to figure out if we want to eat here, or get something in town. We end up deciding to get something in town and just sit and wait for the parade. We get ready and head back to town. On our way, a cart carrying 6 young men, who are slightly intoxicated, pass us. They are having a good time for sure! A race ensues. We get to the bridge, and apparently they are unaware that you have to pay to cross, and security stops them! I flash my bridge pass, and we win! Thank goodness for security – Gerald was driving and people walking were passing us up!
We get downtown and park the cart, walk up and down the beach trying to figure out where to eat, perusing all the menus. I’m in the mood for pasta – shrimp with garlic butter sauce. For some reason, I’m having trouble finding what I want along with something that Gerald will eat. We see James the Rasta woodcarver and have a conversation with him. Then start our search for dinner again.
We end up at a place called Nautical, which is above Fido’s. At least it’s got a good view. I order a shrimp fettuccini and Gerald orders chicken and pasta with a marinara sauce. It says spicy, and we ask if they can hold the spicy if it’s made fresh. We don’t hear back from the waiter, he brings us these yummy little garlic triangles made from the thick flour tortillas they make here. I gotta remember this!
Off the subject… I find it odd that I don’t see the little corn tortillas here like I did in Placencia, only the thick flour tortillas. Strange.
Anyway, we get our dinner, and the fettuccini is ok, the shrimp are a little over done but it’s ok. Gerald says his sauce is spicy and I try it, and he is right. He can’t eat it. We don’t like real spicy stuff like that and this heat lasts in your mouth and on your tongue. There are some people I know who would like it…but not Gerald. Thankfully, they exchange it for a chicken fettuccini and he can eat that. We finish and wait for the boat parade – it’s just about time for them.
We see the first boat coming up the shore, and soon after the parade begins. It’s a little slow – waiting for each boat to pass. There aren’t too many, and while they are going slow, they are going too fast for my night camera and it’s just coming out lines of color and blurred. So I start to take video – and the battery in that camera goes out! Figures! They were a little far out but I hope you can get the gist of it anyway. It was a short parade, but you could hear the people on the boats and docks whistling and hollering.

We didn’t go back to the park to see who won, but just paid for the meal and headed back to the condo. We are going down the beach road, and there is a reception party at a house and they have closed off the beach, so we have to go back. Driving back down the beach, we see Jillian (from Coco Locos) and stop to talk. She says she is playing in a ball game tomorrow at the ball field. We may just go to wee what’s up!
Back to the condo…then bed. It’s way past my bedtime again. Hopefully we will get up before the electric goes out so we can make coffee!
