Not much happened today. We got up, moseyed around the house. Shelton came by to cancel Gerald playing music tonight. They had some sort of water line break at Paradise and had to shut down the restaurant – so no music. We needed a few supplies and Gerald wanted to tell a few people that he wasn’t playing music so we got ready and started to walk to town. The Girls were going to Yoli’s where there was a breeze to play cards, so we hitched a ride with them. We had our drink and they played cards while the Rotary Club had their monthly meeting. It’s the same everywhere I suppose – all talk and complaining, nothing gets done. I just hope they all bought their own lunch.
After Gerald and I finished our drink we walked along the beach to town. It’s a pretty hot day today, and minimal wind. The veggie van is not in town today so we’ll have to get our stuff from Wallens. But not before we stop and have a gelato! We walk along the sidewalk until we get to Cozy Corner and see MaryLou and Dan. We tell them about the cancellation and confirm that they are going on the Monkey River tour with us tomorrow, then head back to pick up our supplies.
We stop at another veggie stand on the main road and pickup a cantaloupe and some bananas. I ask about this odd looking veggie or fruit that was in the stand. It’s a pink color, sort of resembles a cross between a beet and artichoke and the size of a grapefruit. They tell me it’s a Pitaya and it’s a fruit - also called the Dragon Fruit. He opens it up for me to see and gives me a sample to taste. It is as red as can be, like a beet, with tiny black seeds like in a kiwi, soft flesh and sweet. I recall seeing a larger woman on the Sidewalk one day and she was leaned back in her chair apparently eating one of these with a large butcher knife – using it as a fork! She had red from her nose to her chin! She looked like a baby eating chocolate pudding. It was yummy, and I get one!
We head to Wallens to pick up bread and a few eggs. We see Kenney coming home from school with Kevin and his sisters. Once again they have an ideal and he doesn’t. Gerald gives him a shilling (half a quarter) to buy one. He tried to give him a dollar, but Kenney wouldn’t take it. He finally took the shilling and when he came back he gave Gerald a roll of Halls cough drops that his teacher had given him!
We walk home with all the kids and talk. They are so funny. We stop and look at star fish and snails in the water. The kids chase an iguana and throw rocks at some other lizard that Kenney says is bad for the plants (well, that’s what his dad says – they all look alike to me). It was a fun walk home.
We see The Girls and they have made ceveche with the lobster and crab that Alfred caught and bring it down. We have snacks and talk a bit. The ceveche is great! It even tastes good on my stale chips. Luckily they brought fresh ones and it’s even better!
We had made plans to talk to the grandkids at today via video Skype, but the internet is down, and has been for several hours. Francisco ends up having to reset it and finally after a couple of hours we get to make a connection. It’s not a good one, we have to keep calling back, but the kids seem excited – well, maybe more intrigued about seeing themselves. Finally we get a connection that doesn’t cut off after 3 seconds. Erica starts reading her Christmas list…and it’s a doozie! That’s my girl! =) Bradley didn’t get a change to read his, but I’m sure it’s not a short one either! Christmas may be via the internet this year!
That’s about all the excitement today. We missed the sunset working on getting the internet up to make the Skype call.
Tomorrow will be an early day since we meet Alfred to do the Monkey River tour – gotta get my stuff ready for that!
